Guide to Terminating NTUC Membership (SG)

Yes, we all fall for that trick of cash rebates and promotions that once you signed up, you kind of forget about why we signed up for it in the first place. It doesn't add value and it all adds up to the monthly expense.

I am writing because the website in no way explained when/where you can terminate the membership even though I've read all the terms and condition on the website.

As a warning as long as the card remain active, you still owe them some money for the membership. Non-payment or termination of GIRO does not constitute termination of the membership. You have to personally write them an email or call their hotline.

Why am I terminating?

Because I am not using it anymore and it's not really beneficial for me. I only go to the grocery store but not go to NTUC member affiliated shops to shop, attend class. I don't fully utilize benefits.

The cash rebates will only count on the following year. The link points redemption (and can only be redeemed in NTUC Fairprice) 150 pts = S$1, but to earn the link points it's S$1 = S$1.

Only sign up as a member when:

  • You're using this as a visa card.
  • You're using frequently the benefits that they offer.
  • You don't have a term life insurance.

and PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP even when THE FREEBIES look attractive. It's not worth S$9/ month.

So ..
If you are an active member and pays $9/month or S$108/annually and want to terminate the card because you don't really use it except when buying groceries at NTUC (and don't really buy anything else), here are the steps:

1. Look at your linkpoints.

Consume it all. Head to the nearest fairprice and use it! (because you can only use it there)

2. Write to membership@ntuc.org.sg.

You can write as a subject: Termination of Membership Card and details: I am writing to terminate my membership as I deemed it not necessary to use the card anymore. You can leave your NRIC (as it serves as your membership ID)
3. Receive a call from number (62138008) to conduct an exit interview (There is really no getting away from it).

They will ask you the following questions.
  1. Why are you leaving?
  2. Why did you join in the first place?
The caller will tempt you to change your mind to continue with the programme. They will even send you the latest benefit brochure (if you want it).  Just say firm NO.  The caller will also inform you if you have any pending membership fees in arrears (and yes, you still have to pay for them for being "active" in those months even though you're really not using them. You can pay for  outstanding dues here or at any AXS Machine.).

The caller will also let you know that the membership will terminate effectively immediately. Say goodbye to the linkpoints that you have.

Also, if you're just interested in just the linkpoints, you just avail the Plus card at $10 for a lifetime membership.

Morale of the story: Make it a point that the membership fees you paid work for you - that these should save you money rather than "extorting" money.
For me, this was a hundred dollars mistake for just making a quarter of savings.
